Description

The king of the skies has landed.

The Kāhu (Swamp Harrier) is Aotearoa’s largest bird of prey — a soaring, scavenging raptor you’ve probably seen cruising above paddocks or feasting on roadside possum. Powerful and sharp-eyed, they’re nature’s clean-up crew and sky-high hunters with legendary agility and presence.

To Māori, the Kāhu is a symbol of leadership, victory, and sharp perception. When one flies overhead during hui, it’s seen as a tohu — a sign of strength or wisdom to come. With outstretched wings and focused stare, our Kāhu silhouette brings that mana to your backyard in striking form.

✓ Supersized silhouette – 46 cm high × 39 cm wide, approx. 450 g
✓ Symbol of strength – Represents foresight, clarity, and wild spirit
✓ Proudly NZ made – Cut and crafted in a family-run local workshop
✓ Built to endure – Made from 3 mm Corten® steel that weathers, not rusts
✓ Fast dispatch – Same-day shipping on weekday orders placed before 2 pm
✓ Gift-ready – Ships flat in a large 39 × 34 × 1 cm recyclable box

Just like a Kāhu seeks out the perfect perch, placement is everything.

1. Choose a strong surface like a post, tree trunk, or gate that gives the silhouette room to soar
2. Hold the Kāhu firmly with the stake angled downward
3. Tap the end of the stake with a hammer or mallet until the sculpture is stable
4. Pre-drill if needed for extra-dense wood or old posts
5. Angle for impact – you want the wings and stance to stand out
6. Step back, breathe in, and admire the new raptor in your backyard

Top tip: Kāhu love wide open spaces – install in a spot that mimics their natural sky-patrolling range for maximum drama.

Is the Kāhu really that big in real life?
Yes! Their wingspan can reach up to 1.3 m. They’re one of the most visible raptors in NZ, often seen gliding low over paddocks or wetlands.

Where should I install this sculpture?
Best spots include fence posts, tree trunks, or the corner of a shed or deck. Any open space where it can contrast with the sky is ideal.

What is it made from?
Premium 3 mm Corten® steel, which forms a protective, rust-coloured patina that lasts for decades. It’s made to live outdoors.

Does it come ready to gift?
Absolutely. It ships flat in a recyclable cardboard box that fits into a standard mailer — no wrapping required.

What’s the cultural significance of the Kāhu?
To Māori, the Kāhu represents clarity, foresight, and strength. It’s seen as a kaitiaki — a guardian — and a positive sign when it appears.

Each Metalbird is crafted from Corten® Steel, a premium, weathering steel made to last.

When it meets the elements, it doesn’t rust like your old BBQ. It transforms.

That change you’re seeing? That’s patina. A tough, protective outer layer that seals the steel, adds character, and preserves your bird for decades.

This isn’t paint. It’s nature’s way of ageing gracefully.

The Patina Process:

At first, you’ll notice bright orange spots (we call this the teenage phase). Soon enough, the whole bird will turn a bold orange, slowly shifting into deep burnt umber. Eventually, it settles into a moody charcoal that feels like it’s always belonged.

The Result? A piece of industrial art with a heartbeat. No peeling, no fading, just a bird that gets better with age.
