A familiar lookout, close to home.
Long beak, straight back, eyes on the next opportunity. Kōtare has the look of a bird that knows exactly what it is waiting for. Our steel kingfisher holds that pose on a branch of its own. Put it on a timber perch where you can see the shape against the sky, or send it to someone who loves a coastal walk.
Steel that changes with the seasons
Corten is weathering steel. Its grey surface changes through orange and brown tones outdoors as a natural rust patina develops. Each setting leaves its own mark, so colour and timing vary. Allow water to drain and keep rusty runoff away from pale stone, walls and other surfaces that could stain.
Choose a perch. Tap it in.
Choose sound, solid wood with space around the silhouette. Hold the branch securely, angle the mounting spike slightly downward and tap the thick end with a hammer or mallet until steady. Hard wood may need a pilot hole. Wear gloves and eye protection, and keep the pointed spike away from children. A fence post or timber planter is a useful alternative to a living tree.

Do I have to use a tree?
No. Use sound timber such as a fence post or wooden planter. If you prefer a living tree, consult the tree-care guidance in our Help Centre and choose the site carefully; no tree-safety guarantee is implied.
