Description

Our favourite flittering fantail, now here to support your indoor jungle.
Just like the real thing darting around your garden, this Pīwakawaka adds charm and movement to your plant babies. A little bit sculpture, a little bit support system, this stake helps trailing and climbing plants thrive — while bringing native birdlife indoors.

Crafted from 3mm Corten® weathering steel, it arrives in two parts and slots together easily for a 70cm tall stake. Pop it in a pot, wrap your vines around it, and watch the compliments roll in.

Two-piece design – 35cm high each, 70cm when assembled, approx. 300g
Fits in a standard A4 box – 30cm × 21cm × 1cm for easy gifting and postage
Same day dispatch – on weekday orders placed before 2pm
Made in NZ – locally cut and finished in a family-run factory
Built to last outdoors – 3mm Corten® steel develops a natural protective patina
Perfect for indoor and outdoor plants – combines practical support with native style

Quick to plant, easy to love — just like a real fantail flitting through your garden.

1. Slide the two stake pieces together until they form a sturdy, seamless support
2. Choose a pot or garden spot with enough depth for the full 70cm stake
3. Push the stake gently but firmly into the soil, keeping clear of your plant’s main root system
4. Use soft ties or clips if needed to help your plant catch on and start climbing
5. Tilt slightly if needed to suit your plant’s shape and give it room to grow
6. Stand back and admire your upgraded #plantgang

Top tip: Leave a little space between your plant’s base and the stake to help it reach out and grip on naturally.

Why do Pīwakawaka fan their tails like that?
Fantails use their iconic fanned tail to flush insects out of hiding, making them easier to catch. Functional and fabulous!

Is this for indoor or outdoor use?
Both! It’s made from Corten® steel, so it holds up beautifully outdoors and looks just as stunning inside.

Can I use this as a climbing support?
Yes – it’s perfect for trailing or climbing houseplants like pothos, monstera, or string of hearts.

Do I need tools to assemble it?
No. It clicks together easily by sliding the two pieces into each other — no tools or force required.

Is this a good gift?
Absolutely. It comes flat-packed in an A4 box and works for anyone who loves plants, birds, or clever design.

Each Metalbird is crafted from Corten® Steel, a premium, weathering steel made to last.

When it meets the elements, it doesn’t rust like your old BBQ. It transforms.

That change you’re seeing? That’s patina. A tough, protective outer layer that seals the steel, adds character, and preserves your bird for decades.

This isn’t paint. It’s nature’s way of ageing gracefully.

The Patina Process:

At first, you’ll notice bright orange spots (we call this the teenage phase). Soon enough, the whole bird will turn a bold orange, slowly shifting into deep burnt umber. Eventually, it settles into a moody charcoal that feels like it’s always belonged.

The Result? A piece of industrial art with a heartbeat. No peeling, no fading, just a bird that gets better with age.
