Description

We’re changing things up and doing a limited NZ release of this super-popular Metalbird duo from the UK flock. Like the bird, they’re not here in great numbers, so catch them while you can! These Barn Swallows are true internationals – they live on every continent except Antarctica. But wherever they are, they’re always searching out a barn – or a shed – to build their cool mud nests on. A super-agile flier, the Barn Swallow can hunt at speed just a few inches above the ground or over water, its deeply forked tail streaming out behind it. What a worthy pair for your backyard.

✓ Easy to send our regular boxes are standard A4 size, measuring 31cm x 21 cm x 1cm

Inspired by birds who build their homes high, but install low-stress.

    1. Choose a timber surface such as a fence post, pergola beam, or tree
    2. Hold the stake at a downward angle for strength
    3. Use a hammer or mallet to gently tap in the thicker end of the base
    4. Step back and admire the way these swallows turn your space into art

Top tip: Install in a spot where light filters through the steel — it’ll cast beautiful shadows at dawn and dusk.

Why are these swallows a limited release?
This design comes from our UK range and is available in NZ for a short time — get them while you can.

Do real swallows nest in pairs like this?
Yes! Barn swallows mate for life and build their iconic mud-cup nests in sheltered places like sheds and rafters.

What kind of surface should I install this into?
They’re best installed into wooden posts, fences, trees, or untreated timber — anything solid but not rock hard.

    Is this weatherproof?
Absolutely. The 3mm Corten® steel develops a natural rust-like patina that protects the metal over time.

What makes this design a great gift?
Swallows symbolise safe travel and faithful partnership — perfect for couples, travellers, and bird lovers alike.

Most of our steel bird silhouettes are cut from 3 mm Corten weathering steel. Check the individual product for its material, thickness and manufacturing origin: wooden birds, clothing and other products have their own specifications.

Why does Corten steel change colour?

Outdoors, the steel develops a natural rust patina. Grey gives way to orange and brown tones, with the setting and weather doing their bit. The colour and timing vary. It is unpainted steel, so a permanent black finish is not part of the deal.

    Where should I put it?

Choose a spot with good drainage. Rusty runoff can mark pale paving, pots and walls, particularly while the steel is weathering. Follow the mounting instructions for your particular bird or feeder.

    The Patina Process:

That first flash of orange? Your steel bird is settling in. Corten weathering steel develops a natural rust patina, changing through orange and brown tones as it spends time outdoors.

    How long does patina take?

There is no fixed timetable or guaranteed final colour. Rain, humidity, airflow and the position you choose all affect how the surface changes.

    Will it stain nearby surfaces?

Rusty runoff can mark paving, pots and walls, especially during early weathering. Leave room around pale surfaces and choose a location where water can drain freely.

    Is my bird painted black?

Corten birds are unpainted steel. Their finish changes naturally; they are not intended to stay permanently black. Check your product page for the exact material and care instructions.
