Description

Big. Bold. Beautiful. The Kererū doesn’t do subtle, and neither does this sculpture.

From its thunderous wingbeats to its comical landings in fruit-laden trees, the Kererū is a beloved icon of the Aotearoa skies. Known for its striking size, iridescent plumage, and important ecological role, this native wood pigeon is the only bird left that can swallow and spread large native seeds — keeping giants like Tawa and Karaka alive and well.

Our silhouette captures that round-bellied charm in enduring Corten® steel, bringing a bit of native drama and delight to any backyard. Whether you’re celebrating wildlife, gifting something uniquely Kiwi, or honouring a memory under the trees — this big bird brings real heart.

✓ Bold native tribute – 30 cm high × 34 cm wide, approx. 300 g
✓ Built to weather beautifully – Made from 3 mm Corten® steel that forms a protective rust-hued patina
✓ Proudly made in NZ – Produced in a local, family-run workshop
✓ Gift-ready packaging – Ships in a flat A4 box (31 × 21 × 1 cm)
✓ Same-day dispatch – Orders placed weekdays before 2 pm ship fast
✓ Easy to install outdoors – No tools required, just a hammer and a sturdy post or tree

Like the Kererū itself — this install is loud, fast, and effective.

1. Pick a prime perch – Choose a tree, fence post, or raised garden bed
2. Hold the stake at a downward angle to anchor securely
3. Firmly tap the thickest end of the stake with a hammer or mallet
4. Pre-drill if needed – especially if your surface is hardwood
5. Adjust the angle to suit – get the classic Kererū stance just right
6. Step back and admire – no crashing necessary, your bird has landed

Top tip: Position near native shrubs or trees — Kererū love fruiting plants like Kawakawa and Puriri.

Is the Kererū still protected in NZ?
Yes, fully protected! Once hunted, now cherished. It’s illegal to harm or hunt them, and their comeback story is a win for conservation.

What’s it made from?
Each silhouette is made from 3 mm Corten® steel — a durable, weathering material that forms a rust-like patina that protects it from the elements.

How long does it take to weather?
You’ll see the first signs of patina (the natural rust colouring) within a few weeks. It’ll deepen over time, blending beautifully into the landscape.

Is it difficult to install?
Not at all — just hold it steady and tap into wood with a hammer. That’s it. No screws, wires, or power tools needed.

Will it scare away birds in my garden?
Not likely — real birds often perch nearby or ignore it completely. It adds a wild touch without disrupting your ecosystem.

Each Metalbird is crafted from Corten® Steel, a premium, weathering steel made to last.

When it meets the elements, it doesn’t rust like your old BBQ. It transforms.

That change you’re seeing? That’s patina. A tough, protective outer layer that seals the steel, adds character, and preserves your bird for decades.

This isn’t paint. It’s nature’s way of ageing gracefully.

The Patina Process:

At first, you’ll notice bright orange spots (we call this the teenage phase). Soon enough, the whole bird will turn a bold orange, slowly shifting into deep burnt umber. Eventually, it settles into a moody charcoal that feels like it’s always belonged.

The Result? A piece of industrial art with a heartbeat. No peeling, no fading, just a bird that gets better with age.
