Description

Our national icon, immortalised in steel.
The North Island Brown Kiwi might be flightless, but it’s no lightweight. It has cat-like whiskers, hair-like feathers, and legs so powerful it can outrun a human. Sadly, what it doesn’t have is natural defence. Stoats, dogs, and habitat loss continue to threaten this incredible native bird — and yet, thousands of human Kiwis are fighting back, protecting 230,000 hectares of land to help save them.

This silhouette is a tribute to both birds: the nocturnal miracle in the bush, and the everyday Kiwi doing their bit. Nestled in your garden, it’s a proud nod to the wild and the wonderful.

This Kiwi was made to roam — or at least appear like it’s about to.

Here’s how to get it perfectly perched:

1. Choose a spot with solid ground — garden beds, native bush zones, or coastal tracks are all ideal
2. Hold the stake at a gentle downward angle, and insert directly into firm soil or grass
3. If you're short on soft earth, wedge between stones, sleepers, or planter boxes
4. Check it’s upright, then step back and admire your nocturnal neighbour

Top Tip: Looks especially striking at sunrise or sunset — when the silhouette really pops.

Why is the Kiwi so special?
Kiwis are nocturnal, flightless, and truly unique to NZ — with a powerful connection to our national identity. Their survival depends on conservation efforts across the country.

Where’s the best place to install it?
Anywhere with stable soil — or wedge it securely between pavers, rocks, or planter boxes. It’s versatile, as long as it’s snug.

Will it hold up in wild weather?
Absolutely. It’s made from 3mm Corten® steel — designed to rust beautifully without degrading or staining. Built to thrive outdoors.

Does it need tools to install?
Not really. Just pressure and a steady hand. For harder ground, a rubber mallet or small spade might help to get started.

Can I gift this to a Kiwi overseas?
Yes — and it makes a brilliant reminder of home. It ships flat and fits into a standard postal mailer for easy overseas gifting.

Each Metalbird is crafted from Corten® Steel, a premium, weathering steel made to last.

When it meets the elements, it doesn’t rust like your old BBQ. It transforms.

That change you’re seeing? That’s patina. A tough, protective outer layer that seals the steel, adds character, and preserves your bird for decades.

This isn’t paint. It’s nature’s way of ageing gracefully.

The Patina Process:

At first, you’ll notice bright orange spots (we call this the teenage phase). Soon enough, the whole bird will turn a bold orange, slowly shifting into deep burnt umber. Eventually, it settles into a moody charcoal that feels like it’s always belonged.

The Result? A piece of industrial art with a heartbeat. No peeling, no fading, just a bird that gets better with age.
