Description

A bold backyard moment for one of New Zealand’s boldest birds.
Known for their fearless flitting and chirpy “cheet cheet” call, the Pīwakawaka doesn’t wait around for your attention — it demands it. This large-format sculpture celebrates the fantail in motion, complete with a smaller sidekick trailing behind, just like in the garden.

Crafted from 3mm Corten® steel, this iconic pair develops a gorgeous rust-like patina over time, blending naturally into your outdoor space. Slightly larger than life, they’re designed to catch light, cast shadows, and maybe even attract the real thing.

Eye-catching design – Slightly oversized duo with amazing silhouette presence
Dimensions – 38cm high × 37cm wide, approx. 450g

Fantails are known for their spontaneity — and installing this pair should be just as breezy.

1. Pick your spot — A fence post, tree trunk, garden beam, or raised bed all work beautifully.
2. Hold the piece firmly at a downward angle — this mimics the natural strength of a bird perched.
3. Use a hammer or mallet to tap the thickest part of the base until it’s steady.
4. No pre-drilling needed for most wood. If your surface is very dense or old, pre-drilling may help.
5. That’s it. Step back. Let your fantails take flight.

Top tip: Place where sunlight hits it at sunrise or sunset — the shadows are pure magic.

Why are fantails so friendly?
They follow people (and animals!) to catch insects stirred up from movement. It’s not affection — it’s smart foraging.

Can this be placed in any outdoor spot?
Yes! It’s designed to handle all weather. Choose a spot with some contrast so their silhouette really stands out.

What’s the best time of year to install it?
Anytime — but installing in autumn means you’ll get to enjoy how the patina develops alongside the changing leaves.

Can I leave it in the ground permanently?
Absolutely. The Corten® steel forms a stable, protective patina that won’t flake off or damage plants.

How do I clean it if needed?
You don’t have to — but a gentle wipe with a cloth will remove cobwebs or dust if desired.

Each Metalbird is crafted from Corten® Steel, a premium, weathering steel made to last.

When it meets the elements, it doesn’t rust like your old BBQ. It transforms.

That change you’re seeing? That’s patina. A tough, protective outer layer that seals the steel, adds character, and preserves your bird for decades.

This isn’t paint. It’s nature’s way of ageing gracefully.

The Patina Process:

At first, you’ll notice bright orange spots (we call this the teenage phase). Soon enough, the whole bird will turn a bold orange, slowly shifting into deep burnt umber. Eventually, it settles into a moody charcoal that feels like it’s always belonged.

The Result? A piece of industrial art with a heartbeat. No peeling, no fading, just a bird that gets better with age.
