Description

Bowl those birds over (metaphorically speaking).
Designed for curious companions with feathers, this clever bowl feeder lets you offer fresh water to local birds — all while adding a bit of playful sculpture to your outdoor space. It’s part habitat upgrade, part art piece.

We forget that access to water isn’t guaranteed for the birds around us — especially in summer. This feeder solves that with style. The Mini Pīwakawaka adds a cheerful presence, while the steel base supports any small dish or saucer you choose. Pop one near a window and you’ll have daily visitors before long.

This is one of our easiest installs — and one of the most rewarding.

Here’s how to get birds lining up at your new water bar:

1. Assemble by sliding the Mini Pīwakawaka silhouette into the base ring
2. Choose a spot that’s visible and accessible — a fence rail, tree trunk, or edge of a planter box
3. Hold the base horizontally, with the bowl cut-out facing directly down
4. Tap the thickest part of the stake into timber using a mallet or hammer
5. Place your chosen bowl in the centre hole (porcelain, glass, plastic, or even a cut bottle)
6. Fill with fresh water and enjoy the company

Top Tip: Clean and refill daily in warmer months — birds will keep coming back if the water’s clean.

What kind of bowls fit inside this?
Any round dish with a base diameter of up to 10cm. Think saucers, ramekins, teacups, or even the bottom of a cut plastic bottle. It’s designed to be flexible and easy.

Will the birds actually use this?
Yes — especially in summer or dry spells. Birds are always on the lookout for clean water sources. Positioning it near shrubs or branches makes them feel safer while they drink.

Is the bowl included?
No — that’s up to you. We did this to allow for personalisation and sustainability (reuse what you have!).

Does it rust or stain?
It develops a beautiful patina over time. The Corten® steel is built to weather naturally and protect itself — it won’t flake, stain, or weaken.

Can I gift this with a bird silhouette?
Absolutely — it pairs perfectly with any of our NZ birds, especially the full-size Pīwakawaka.

Each Metalbird is crafted from Corten® Steel, a premium, weathering steel made to last.

When it meets the elements, it doesn’t rust like your old BBQ. It transforms.

That change you’re seeing? That’s patina. A tough, protective outer layer that seals the steel, adds character, and preserves your bird for decades.

This isn’t paint. It’s nature’s way of ageing gracefully.

The Patina Process:

At first, you’ll notice bright orange spots (we call this the teenage phase). Soon enough, the whole bird will turn a bold orange, slowly shifting into deep burnt umber. Eventually, it settles into a moody charcoal that feels like it’s always belonged.

The Result? A piece of industrial art with a heartbeat. No peeling, no fading, just a bird that gets better with age.
