Description

Bring the beauty of native New Zealand birds to your backyard with our life-sized Kōtare silhouette.

The Kōtare’s impressive bill is not just pretty — it’s a mighty tool for survival. Known for its territorial dive attacks and unique burrowing habits, this iconic native Kingfisher is all action and attitude. You’ll often spot one poised on a powerline, patiently watching and waiting. It’s no surprise a group of them is called “a concentration.” Now you can bring that same focused energy home, with a sculpture that’s both striking and meaningful.

They’re known for sitting perfectly still, waiting to strike — whether it’s fish, insects or even a small reptile. And when it comes to nest-building? These clever birds use that impressive bill like a jackhammer, ramming decaying wood to hollow out the perfect nest.

Our Kōtare is:
✓ Striking and elegant – 19cm high × 31cm wide, approx. 300g
✓ Easy to send – packaged in our standard A4 box (31 × 21 × 1cm)
✓ Same-day dispatch – on weekday orders placed before 2pm
✓ Made locally in NZ – crafted in a family-owned factory
✓ Designed for the long haul – 3mm Corten steel develops a rich patina
✓ A breeze to install – hammer it into a tree, post or fence and enjoy

The Kōtare is a patient predator — but installation doesn’t need to be.

1. Hold your Kingfisher at a downward angle
2. Tap the thickest part of the stake with a hammer or mallet
3. Install into a tree, wooden post or fence
4. Pre-drill if mounting into hardwood
5. Step back and let the Kōtare perch with pride

Top tip: Choose a spot with a bit of open space around the beak — it really shows off the iconic silhouette.

How do I install my Kōtare sculpture?
Hold it on a downward angle and gently tap the end of the stake with a hammer or mallet until secure. If you're mounting into a post, pre-drill a hole first.

Will it rust or stain outdoor surfaces?
Nope. It’s made from 3mm Corten® steel, which weathers to a rich patina that protects the metal without rubbing off or rusting like regular steel.

What makes the Kōtare special?
Kōtare have incredible eyesight — they can judge water depth and distance with precision, helping them spear prey from above in one sharp dive.

Is it OK to install this in a tree?
Yes, trees, posts, fences — all great spots. Just avoid hammering into live tree trunks too hard. Pre-drilling can help.

Can I gift this to someone overseas?
Definitely. It’s flat-packed in an A4-sized gift box and weighs around 300g, making it easy and affordable to send worldwide.

Each Metalbird is crafted from Corten® Steel, a premium, weathering steel made to last.

When it meets the elements, it doesn’t rust like your old BBQ. It transforms.

That change you’re seeing? That’s patina. A tough, protective outer layer that seals the steel, adds character, and preserves your bird for decades.

This isn’t paint. It’s nature’s way of ageing gracefully.

The Patina Process:

At first, you’ll notice bright orange spots (we call this the teenage phase). Soon enough, the whole bird will turn a bold orange, slowly shifting into deep burnt umber. Eventually, it settles into a moody charcoal that feels like it’s always belonged.

The Result? A piece of industrial art with a heartbeat. No peeling, no fading, just a bird that gets better with age.
