Description

A rare native bird. A beautiful silhouette. A real conservation impact.
Say hello to the Hoiho (Yellow-eyed Penguin) — a true taonga of Aotearoa and your official 2024 Bird of the Year. Known for its piercing call, golden eye band, and fiercely loyal parenting instincts, the Hoiho is one of the world’s rarest penguins… and now, one of the most striking additions to your backyard.

This isn’t just a piece of steel art — it’s part of a mission. 30% of proceeds from every Hoiho sold go directly to Forest & Bird to fund real conservation work that protects endangered birds across Aotearoa.

Cut from weathering Corten® steel and built to last, this Hoiho is ready to stand tall in your garden, on your deck, or by your front gate. Whether it’s a gift for a wildlife lover or a tribute to a resilient spirit, this penguin makes a bold, meaningful statement.

Our Hoiho is:
Life-sized and full of character – 31 cm high × 15 cm wide (includes stake), approx. 300 g
Easy to gift – Ships flat in our standard A4 box (31 × 21 × 1 cm)
Weathering naturally – Made from 3 mm Corten® steel that forms a beautiful patina
Locally made – Proudly cut and crafted in NZ by a family-run workshop
Supports conservation – 30% of each Hoiho sale goes to Forest & Bird
Thoughtful & meaningful – A symbol of strength, endurance, and care

No chill like penguin chill — setup takes seconds.

1. Find a spot like a timber fence post, gate, raised bed, or deck rail
2. Hold your Hoiho at a downward angle with the stake against the wood
3. Tap the thickest end of the stake with a hammer or mallet until secure
4. Adjust for tilt and visibility — aim for chest-height viewing
5. Take a moment to appreciate that 30% of this penguin is out saving birds!

Install Tip: For harder surfaces like hardwood or dense posts, pre-drill a small guide hole before tapping in.

What’s special about the Hoiho?
It’s one of the world’s rarest penguins and a symbol of NZ’s wildlife resilience. Known for its yellow eyes and loud call, it's native to the South Island and subantarctic regions.

Where does the donation go?
30% of each Hoiho sale goes directly to Forest & Bird, helping protect native species and habitats across Aotearoa.

Will it rust?
No — it’s made from Corten® steel, which forms a natural protective layer. It weathers beautifully over time, blending into outdoor spaces.

Can I give this as a gift?
Absolutely. It comes in a flat A4 box, perfect for gifting or posting, and includes a feel-good impact story too.

Where is it made?
Here in Aotearoa, in a locally owned, family-run factory using sustainable practices and skilled hands.

Each Metalbird is crafted from Corten® Steel, a premium, weathering steel made to last.

When it meets the elements, it doesn’t rust like your old BBQ. It transforms.

That change you’re seeing? That’s patina. A tough, protective outer layer that seals the steel, adds character, and preserves your bird for decades.

This isn’t paint. It’s nature’s way of ageing gracefully.

The Patina Process:

At first, you’ll notice bright orange spots (we call this the teenage phase). Soon enough, the whole bird will turn a bold orange, slowly shifting into deep burnt umber. Eventually, it settles into a moody charcoal that feels like it’s always belonged.

The Result? A piece of industrial art with a heartbeat. No peeling, no fading, just a bird that gets better with age.
