Description

Not here to mess around — meet the Kārearea, Aotearoa’s fiercest raptor.

Small but mighty, the Kārearea (NZ Falcon) is known for its powerful flight, piercing cry, and fearsome dive-bombing strikes. While it’s one of our most threatened birds of prey, it’s also one of the boldest — launching high-speed aerial attacks from treetop perches to take down live prey mid-air.

Both male and female Kārearea can be identified by their unique “moustache” markings and alert, forward-facing eyes. With this Corten® steel silhouette, you can capture that energy and elegance permanently in your garden — no helmet required.

✓ Fierce & fearless – 34 cm high × 30 cm wide, approx. 300 g
✓ Built for the wild – Crafted from 3 mm Corten® steel that develops a beautiful, protective patina
✓ Made right here – Produced locally in a family-run NZ workshop
✓ Easy to send – Ships in a recyclable flat-pack A4 box (31 × 21 × 1 cm)
✓ Rapid dispatch – Orders placed weekdays before 2 pm go out same-day
✓ Symbolic & striking – A tribute to one of our rarest native raptors

Channel your inner Kārearea and go in with precision.

1. Pick a high vantage point – A post, tree trunk, or fence edge that gives your falcon the view it deserves
2. Hold the stake at a downward angle and steady the silhouette in place
3. Tap the thickest end of the stake with a hammer or mallet until secure
4. Pre-drill if needed — especially for dense wood or recycled timber
5. Adjust the angle so the wings and stance catch the light
6. Step back and admire — your garden now has a guardian

Top tip: Just like the real thing, the Kārearea looks best with a clear line of sight — avoid crowded or leafy spots.

Is the Kārearea really different from the Kāhu?
Yes — Kārearea hunt live prey with sharp speed, while Kāhu (harrier hawks) are often seen feeding on carrion. Falcons are faster, smaller, and more aggressive.

What’s the best way to display it?
Aim high. A tree trunk, tall fence post or even the corner of a garden shed will give your Kārearea the visual punch it deserves.

Will it rust?
Not in a bad way! It’s made from Corten® steel which weathers into a deep, natural patina. It protects the metal while blending beautifully into outdoor spaces.

Is it gift-ready?
Absolutely. It comes packaged flat in an eco-friendly A4 box that fits easily in a courier mailer. No wrapping required.

Is the Kārearea endangered?
Yes — they’re one of our most threatened birds of prey due to habitat loss and human impacts. Displaying this bird is a tribute to one of our toughest survivors.

Each Metalbird is crafted from Corten® Steel, a premium, weathering steel made to last.

When it meets the elements, it doesn’t rust like your old BBQ. It transforms.

That change you’re seeing? That’s patina. A tough, protective outer layer that seals the steel, adds character, and preserves your bird for decades.

This isn’t paint. It’s nature’s way of ageing gracefully.

The Patina Process:

At first, you’ll notice bright orange spots (we call this the teenage phase). Soon enough, the whole bird will turn a bold orange, slowly shifting into deep burnt umber. Eventually, it settles into a moody charcoal that feels like it’s always belonged.

The Result? A piece of industrial art with a heartbeat. No peeling, no fading, just a bird that gets better with age.
