Description

A Pīwakawaka with a can-do attitude.

This is the bird that started it all. When Phil first designed this silhouette — a fantail perched proudly on a hammer — he wasn’t just sketching something clever. He was channelling the soul of Aotearoa.

‘A Fan of DIY’ is a tribute to the number 8 wire mindset: inventive, practical, quietly brilliant. It's the kind of garden décor that doesn’t just look good — it means something. Made right here in New Zealand from 3mm Corten® steel, this piece will slowly weather to a rich, rusted patina, blending beautifully into your outdoor space.

Whether you're honouring a tinkerer, a maker, a Dad who’s always in the shed, or someone who fixed your broken gate without even asking — this is the kind of gift they’ll never forget.

Every bird is part of the global Metalbird art project — a living tribute to memory, connection, and creativity.

This is the only hammer you'll want to hit with a hammer.

‘A Fan of DIY’ is designed for vertical mounting — perfect for a fence post, tree trunk, or upright timber beam.

1. Choose a solid vertical surface like a post, tree, or shed wall
2. Hold the silhouette upright with the hammer stake angled slightly downward
3. Tap the flat head of the hammer with a hammer or mallet until firmly embedded
4. Step back and admire the most Kiwi thing you’ve ever installed

Top Tip: For hardwood or older posts, pre-drilling a small pilot hole makes it even easier — a classic DIY fix.

Why a pīwakawaka on a hammer?
It’s a cheeky nod to our national identity — mixing our most beloved native bird with one of the most iconic tools in the shed. A tribute to New Zealand’s number 8 wire spirit.

Is this meant for vertical or horizontal install?
Vertical. The hammer acts as the stake — it’s designed to mount into fence posts, tree trunks, or upright beams. Despite the horizontal look, it’s made to stand tall.

Will it last outside?
Yes — beautifully. It’s made from weathering Corten® steel, which develops a rust-like patina that protects it from the elements.

Can I install it in a live tree?
Absolutely. Just tap gently into mature bark or solid timber. We always encourage gentle installation so you don’t damage your tree or post.

Is this a good gift?
One of our best. It's perfect for Christmas, Father’s Day, birthdays, thank-you gifts, or for anyone who’d rather be in the shed than on the couch.

Each Metalbird is crafted from Corten® Steel, a premium, weathering steel made to last.

When it meets the elements, it doesn’t rust like your old BBQ. It transforms.

That change you’re seeing? That’s patina. A tough, protective outer layer that seals the steel, adds character, and preserves your bird for decades.

This isn’t paint. It’s nature’s way of ageing gracefully.

The Patina Process:

At first, you’ll notice bright orange spots (we call this the teenage phase). Soon enough, the whole bird will turn a bold orange, slowly shifting into deep burnt umber. Eventually, it settles into a moody charcoal that feels like it’s always belonged.

The Result? A piece of industrial art with a heartbeat. No peeling, no fading, just a bird that gets better with age.
