Description

New Zealanders know the Kōkako by its haunting, flute-like song—a call so powerful it carries through valleys long after the bird is out of sight.
And while the South Island Kōkako is now extinct, this sculpture honours the North Island survivor, whose blue wattles, masked face and powerful legs make it one of Aotearoa’s most distinctive native birds.

Celebrate this rare forest treasure with a life-sized, weathering steel sculpture that’s both beautiful and meaningful. Perfect for forest lovers, native bird nerds, and anyone who appreciates birdsong over buzzwords.

The Kōkako may be an average flier, but your install will be smooth as.

    1. Hold the bird at a downward angle, then gently tap the thickest end of the stake with a hammer
    2. Install into a tree, post, or fence — just avoid extremely hard surfaces
    3. If needed, pre-drill into dense wood to make tapping easier
    4. Once in, step back and listen — your backyard now sings

Top tip: For best visibility, place at eye level or above against a contrasting backdrop (sky, light fence, etc.)

How big is the Kōkako sculpture?
It’s approximately 32cm high and 21cm wide — a life-sized silhouette that really stands out.

Is this the North Island or South Island Kōkako?
It’s based on the North Island Kōkako, the only remaining species after the South Island bird was declared extinct.

    Where should I install it?
It looks fantastic in trees, on fence posts, or mounted to pergolas or garden edges where the silhouette can shine.

Can I leave it outside year-round?
Yes — it's made from weathering Corten® steel which forms a protective patina, designed for permanent outdoor use.

    Is it easy to install?
Definitely. All you need is a hammer — no screws or tools required unless installing into hardwood (then you may want to pre-drill).

Each Metalbird is crafted from Corten® Steel, a premium, weathering steel made to last.

When it meets the elements, it doesn’t rust like your old BBQ. It transforms.

That change you’re seeing? That’s patina. A tough, protective outer layer that seals the steel, adds character, and preserves your bird for decades.

This isn’t paint. It’s nature’s way of ageing gracefully.

    The Patina Process:

At first, you’ll notice bright orange spots (we call this the teenage phase). Soon enough, the whole bird will turn a bold orange, slowly shifting into deep burnt umber. Eventually, it settles into a moody charcoal that feels like it’s always belonged.

The Result? A piece of industrial art with a heartbeat. No peeling, no fading, just a bird that gets better with age.

what’s the word on the bird?
